Here’s Why the Chevy SS Was a Total Failure
![]() 01/16/2018 at 16:38 |

Because it was a $45K Chevy that didn’t have “Camaro”, “Corvette”, or “Silverado” written on it.

Exactly.
What’s brand recognition? Does this make me look affluent or like a redneck with money?

The Chevrolet SS succeeded at what GM wanted to accomplish: convince Holden that they should stop building cars.
![]() 01/16/2018 at 16:42 |

SS is a trim level, not a model. Stupid Chevy.

If it also looked like a Passat and a Legacy, you could say it was Impassabru.

[sigh] Doug, It wasn’t a failure. Holden built as many as they could for America given the available production capacity and the underlying cost of production. It was never going to be available in significant numbers so why spend the coin marketing something that naturally sold what little was available?
It may well have been a failure for GM if they didn’t make bank on it but they won’t tell us that now will they?

Hahaha!! ...wait, were you serious?
![]() 01/16/2018 at 16:52 |

Probably. You know all the people butthurt about the Edge ST? Now make the trim level over 50 years old.

Outside of the car enthusiasts, how many people knew this car was actually a thing though?
If those how many were content with a Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, or something from across the pond?
When you’re playing darts, you have to at least hit the dart board. Not the juke box 20 feet to the left of it.
To be fair I liked it, but am not in the market for anything new just yet....

i had a buddy who when they first announced it got so confused when i told him i was excited for the new Chevy SS. he kept asking if i meant the camaro or if they were bringing back another ss model for the impala or malibu and i had to explain that its literally its own model. the chevy ss

Impalabu?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I’d totally consider a used one if prices decreased enough though.
Keep them down Doug. >:D

Not gonna lie, if I worked for a Chevy dealer I probably would have picked one up when they were offering 20% or whatever it was off of them.

It’d be like Dodge having a Dodge R/T. An R/T what? Or, to go more current, a Ford ST. Most people recognize SS as a trim level, Camaro SS, Impala SS, Chevelle SS, etc, not an individual model.
Granted, that’s not why it’s a failure. It was never intended to be a high volume model. I just always thought “SS” was a stupid name for a standalone model.

I’ve been shopping these to replace my Lancer. 4 doors, manual, v8. Outside of a Charger (which is WOMP WOMP BLOATED MUSCLE THING), this is what exists. And if you want more power, it’s got an LS and mods are ripe for the picking.

I knew of its existence quite well, but I can’t justify spending $50k on any car, especially since that’s more than I make in a year— and I’m not a big fan of living beyond my means. As Doug said, if they offered a $35k version without any of the fancy features, they would have sold more of them. I would have certainly considered one at $35k or less.

So, how do you feel about the model designations of Mercedes, Lexus, BMW, etc...?
![]() 01/16/2018 at 21:02 |

While you make a good point and I agree with you, a unique standalone Ford ST model would probably be a pretty awesome car

The average joe public just doesn’t want fast sedans unless it’s got a luxury badge and even then volumes are dropping - “give me more Audi CUVs!”. That’s just the way it is. “And I want a bunch of stupid electronic gizmos that I’ll never use too!” You can’t run a viable business on what you think people should buy.

ST is fairly new enough to potentially pull it off. I can’t think of a vintage Ford equivalent. Boss? But the Ford Boss sounds kind of kickass too.

It’d be like having a BMW M. Or an Audi S. They second character is rather important.
Alphanumeric designations of standard models are a different ball game though. About the only Euro manufacturer naming I can easily follow anymore is Audi.

All I can think of equivalent in spirit is the AMG GT. It’s not a Mercedes warmed up by AMG, it is just AMG from the ground up. One could make a similar case for the Ford GT I suppose too.
I think the Ford ST would be a Miata or BRZ type competitor with the 3 ST engines stuffed in them.

Ah. I thought u meant that the car itself wasn’t called SS, not that it shouldn’t be called that. I get it now

A Dodge Charger R/T was $10,000 less so yeah, way off the board with the SS.

It failed because it is a Chevrolet at a time when many enthusiasts are angry with the way that Chevrolet handled their bankruptcy and subsequent reformation. I personally will never buy another Chevy again even though I love their new line up and especially the SS and Corvettes etc...
